Charles, a retired man, gets a new lease on life when he answers a private investigator ad and becomes a mole in a secret investigation into a nursing home. Michael Schur was inspired to create “A Man On the Inside” after watching the Chilean documentary “The Mole Agent.” He says: The documentary “The Mole Agent” is powerful because it makes people feel something remarkably similar regardless of age, ethnicity or gender, and I would describe that feeling very reductively as “I have to call my mother.” In our show, we tried to do a similar thing with the tone: basically, our show contributes to that feeling of making us want to call our mothers?.
I’m 67 and it’s been so wonderful to see so many actors of our generation and their great comedic styles. The script gets a little lost in trying to solve the mystery and delves more into the characters’ storylines.
It’s okay because you have a good idea of who the culprit is about halfway through. You don’t mind that it’s not really a mystery because you’re just having fun watching these golden old men work and show off their stuff.
Just a tribute to how brave it is to be a senior citizen and still be active and feel seen in our youth-oriented society. What a sweet tribute to those who support us and help us navigate the minefields of aging this series was.
