A modern tale of fortune-hunting in the world of oil rigs in West Texas
See the most popular movies and TV shows by writer/director Taylor Sheridan on IMDb, ranked by user ratings. A landman, at least one who works in the oil industry, will be the middleman between exploration companies and landowners. Typically, a landowner’s job is to negotiate and finalize agreements with landowners who hold mineral rights to lease those rights to the company they represent.
They are essentially the managers of the land and secure leases in order to drill for oil and gas. Like a foreman on a construction site, they build roads, workers’ housing (man camp), supervise the assembly of mining machinery, and the drilling of the well itself, especially in remote locations. They are also part problem-solver, troubleshooter, and facilitator.
For someone so focused on his goals, the inclusion of an emotionally unstable, one-woman circus completely defeats the purpose of the show. Her character feels like she disrupts the main narrative, adding unnecessary chaos rather than supporting his journey. This portrayal doesn’t enhance the plot, but instead makes it harder to take his determination and focus seriously.
The wife comes across as emotionally unpredictable, and the daughter seems to lack intellectual depth, making her contribution to the plot negligible. The portrayal of the daughter feels particularly shallow, as her character offers little beyond superficial involvement, which adds nothing to the story. Furthermore, the constant jumping around of these characters in provocative clothing, seemingly for the sole purpose of attracting attention, feels out of place in the show’s tone.
