So she tries to persuade Carol, a skeptical medium, to help her

It follows the child Emma on her journey to learn how to communicate with the spirit of a girl, Uxoa, who has been trapped in a hermitage for centuries. Suspenseful, terrifying, melancholic, oppressive fantasy thriller with echoes of a ghost story. Supernatural thriller full of spooky acts, thrills, chills and plenty of terror; however, some are confusing and inexplicable and the reasons for some spooky events are never properly explained. The film depicts a fictional story of the social reality that haunts a small town. It begins with a seemingly historical prologue involving the plague, a chapel where the sick were imprisoned and a regiment of beak-like bird people, but it turns out to be just a reenactment of a pageant as part of a small town’s annual festival, during which the chapel, believed to be haunted by little Usoa, is opened for a short time.

A tense mystery film full of thrills, suspense, chills, red herrings and scary twists

It follows child Emma (Maia Zaitegi) on her journey to learn how to communicate with the spirit of a girl, Uxoa, trapped in a hermitage for centuries. So she tries to persuade Carol (Belén Rueda), a skeptical and fake medium, to help her. The latter literally bears scars from a childhood when her mother, a possibly real medium, seemed more interested in the spirit of a local little girl than in her own daughter. This is a passable and acceptable film with many not always sympathetic, deeply human and relatable protagonists. This is a ghost film full of restless horror and an eerie atmosphere when the menacing entity appears.

This fades as the film progresses, preventing us from talking about a gem like Cerdita

Step by step the mystery is revealed until it reaches its surprise ending, which leads to a sentimental ghost story with serious, brooding undertones in the style of The Orphanage or Pan’s Labyrinth, but with its own distinctive female focus. It is an attractive drama whose interest wanes as the effective overabundance of its tiring accumulation of supposedly terrifying elements increases. While Cerdita focuses on pure terror in La Ermita, there are several things that mark Pereda as a key figure in the current horror and fantasy genre. One of them is his head-on entry into genre cinema: he bets on fantasy without hesitation and adds a bit of personal drama. Nonetheless, Pereda manages to make a more than worthy film, although worse than the previous one.

It has turned out to be an adequate and decent film, but not a remarkable one

Pereda has a great eye for the Gothic and enjoys the characteristics of Spanish horror without really making a horror film. The main role is played by Belén Rueda, who acts well in her usual style. She is an actress who has specialized in mystery and horror films such as: Julia’s Eyes, The Orphanage, No Sleep, During the Torment, The Pact, Orbita 9 and The Corpse. In fact, Belén Rueda is the closest thing Spain has to a horror heroine or “scream queen”. She is in no way inferior to the prodigy Maia Zaitegi, who recalls the young Ana Torrent in Cria Cuervos or El espiritu de la colmena (The Spirit of the Hive).

The film is professionally directed by Carlota Pereda, who is clearly a talented writer and filmmaker

A women’s drama with genre-like tones, it is the second solid calling card for Pereda’s talent. It won 2023: Sitges Film Festival: Official Feature Film Section (Out of Competition) and 2023: Goya Awards (Spain): Nominated for Best Special Effects. Her first film was the much better “Cerdita”, based on the winner of the Goya for Best Short Film of the same name by Carlota Pereda herself, winner of the Goya for Best Short Film in 2018 and which also starred Laura Galán. Rating: 5.5/10.
