Legendary filmmaker Mike Lee returns to the contemporary world with a gritty, compassionate, and often darkly humorous study of family and the thorny bonds that bind us. Reuniting with Lee for the first time since the Oscar-nominated Secrets and Lies, the stunning Marianne Jean-Baptiste stars as Pansy, a woman who is terrified, tormented by grief, and capable of raging against her husband, son, and anyone who stands in every way. Meanwhile, her easygoing younger sister, played by Michelle Austin (Another Year), is a single mother with a life as different as Pansy’s conflicted natures — filled with racial heat from her salon clients and daughters. This expansive film by a master playwright takes us into the intricacies of kinship, duty, and human mysteries: how, despite a lifetime of hurt and hardship, we still find ways to love those we call family.
