Line of Events

When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world's most secretive and ancient events, selecting a new Pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundation of the Catholic Church.. Many of the actions Cardinal Lawrence and the rest of the cardinals take during the film's conclave process are true and accurate to the Catholic faith and centuries of tradition. After the pope dies, his ring (called the Ring of the Fisherman) is removed and destroyed; this is to prevent it from being used to forge the pope's seal on documents. The Vatican makes an official announcement that the throne of the Holy See (the Catholic church's governing body) is vacant. The College of Cardinals are sequestered in apartments (the Domus Sanctae Marthae, Saint Martha's House) to eat and sleep between votes.

Finally, the windows and doors to the Sistine Chapel, where the actual election takes place and ballots are cast, are darkened, shuttered, and locked to maintain the secrecy of the conclave. Some of the newer more recent security measures taken in real life are shown as well, when the conclave that elected Pope Francis I convened in 2013 the Sistine Chapel was swept for bugs and other electronic listening devices, ID cards were issued to all conclave servants because a reporter disguised as a servant was discovered during the conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI in 2005, all members of the College of Cardinals were required to surrender their mobile phones and other electronic devices, Vatican City's Wi-Fi network was temporarily shut down and wireless signal jammers were installed in the Sistine Chapel.. The Roman Catholic Church has had three African Popes: Victor The First (189-199 CE), Miltiades (also known as Melchiades, 311-314 CE), and Gelasius The First (492-496 CE).. Lawrence: Our faith is a living thing precisely because it walks hand-in-hand with doubt. If there was only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mystery.

And therefore no need for faith

Let us pray that God will grant us a Pope who doubts. And let him grant us a Pope who sins and asks for forgiveness and who carries on.. To keep it short & sweet, there are plenty of positive things to say about Conclave.

The movie is nicely paced

Good script brought to life by an ensemble of great actors. It's both shot + framed well. The costume design & overall colour palette is visually pleasing. The only negative I could think of in the earlier stages of the movie would have to be its score. Scores in this style (in my humble opinion) were never great to start with but at this point, they're tired, overused & frankly, monotonous.There is a point where the movie entirely flips on its head for the final act & becomes preposterous & nonsensical.

It's flat-footed & not the least bit clever

A real shame too as up until this point, it's plausible & believable. It ends up leaving a bad taste in your mouth as it emanates that there is a specific Hollywood agenda being pushed here. And this review is written by someone who would consider themselves to hold generally quite liberal views. But the end of this movie is conceited & subversive in the most graceless of fashions.
